The Lazy Man’s Way To Relax And Enjoy Life

There are self-help gurus out there who are making millions of dollars every year teaching people their happiness secrets. The techniques they teach can be quite complicated and their promises are compelling. Who wouldn’t want to be in a state of perpetual happiness?

If you look closely, you will discover something about them: they all assume you need them in order to find your own personal happiness. Their income depends on your unhappiness and inability to find it on your own.

That’s a harsh judgment to make and it may be a little unfair. Some of them seem to have a higher form of happiness to offer. Getting out your scrapbooking papers and making a new scrapbook just for fun and relaxation may not be good enough for them.

Hobbies are one of the most tried and true types of self therapy. While scrapbook making may not be for you, something else probably will be. Hobbies are creative endeavors that have no purpose other than to give you pleasure. You like doing them because they are relaxing and fun.

Millions of teenagers take up the guitar, wanting to be like their favorite rock star. Were you one of those? Like them, you probably set your guitar aside after you learned a few chords and riffs. Why not take out your Alvarez acoustic guitar and play it again? There’s nothing like the sound of music to relax you, especially if you’re playing an instrument yourself. Playing music is one of the purest pleasures imaginable.

If playing music doesn’t appeal to you, what does? It doesn’t matter what it is or whether or not you think you’ll ever get good at it. Take drawing, for instance. Just start sketching things. If you’ve never done it before, there are some excellent books that can teach you enough of the basics that you’ll get the hang of it in no time.

Set aside some time to practice your hobby as often as you can. Even better, remove your black sport watch and stick it in a drawer or something. Let yourself forget about time for awhile and get completely involved in what you’re doing.

There’s a lot more to hobbies than meets the eye. For one thing, they are things we do simply because we like to do them. We’re not trying to impress anybody or working towards a career. When you’re working on your hobby, it’s like a form of pure creative self-indulgence. Aside from being pleasurable while you’re doing it, you’ll be surprised to see how much the pleasures of hobbies can spill out into your daily life.
